EVALUATION OF ROUGH CUT

Analysing our rough cut is important in ensuring that the final clip is as good as possible. In this short piece of writing, I will evaluate the use of camera angles, sound and also editing to gather a better understanding of how I can improve my thriller opening.

Within our rough cut we used a a variety of camera angles, this gave the audience an understanding of the emotions being experianced by the characters. We included a high angle/ birds eye view of the girls sitting in the cupboard feet at the beginning. This was useful in giving the audience a sense of how the individual herself is feeling, the camera looking down on her portrays her as inferior, and gives a sense of the girl being trapped.
Enigmas to be created, and the audience want to find out what happens next. Further on in the short clip, a low angle shot was used as the characters face was revealed for the first time. The camera begun by her feet, and slowly panned up her body until her face was revealed. This created once again tension for the audience, creating that 'edge of the seat tension' which is typically expected within a thriller movie.

The lighing within the thriller opening, was kept relatively simple. The darkness in the cupboard not only reflects the setting, but also makes it clear to the audience that this is taking place during the night. Although the lighting is limited, we are still able to see the individual clearly, as well as any other necessary aspects of the shot.
The shadows that was created within these shots, are useful in creating a sense of panic from the audience, and adds an eerie sense to the scene. However, I do think that in some cases, the light is slightly too bright or too dark, which causes a slight difference between the shot before, and the one that is being shown.

Although we haven't finished adding sound within the thriller opening, sound effects placed does emphasise the tension within the scene and focuses the audience on exactly what is taking place within the scene. The music progresses in both volume and pace as the short clip continues allowing tension to be built and suspicion to be created amongst the audience. In some places however, the non diegetic sound of music, is slightly too loud which results in the diegetic sound of footsteps, and heavy breathing to be slightly limited and unclear.

Overall, there are a few things that need to be done in order to improve the opening scene. The light will be altered slightly, using editing, to highlight specific parts of the shot. This will make the opening more eerie. I also think that some different filters and effects could be used on specific shots, in order to make a more natural flow between the shots. For example there is one shot of the girls in the cupboard, where the lighting has increased massively from the scene before. In order to make this appear more natural and realistic, a filter would be applied to make it slightly darker, matching the lighting in the shots both before and after. I also think that the music within the thriller opening should decrease slightly in volume, allowing the diegetic sounds of breathing and the footsteps of the character walking to become more apparent.  Finally, I think that we will add some smoother transitions between the shots.. After these changes have been made, the opening scene should look a lot more professional and hopefully appear to the audience as more realistic.
